Mission Statement

Franz Liszt, the world-renown composer, pianist, teacher, and one of the founders of the Academy of Music of Budapest, has united in himself patriotism and European open-mindedness, so it is not a coincidence that he evokes respect in people of every era. The Academy of Music still wears his name and strives to carry on his legacy. The fundamental task of the Liszt Ferenc Memorial Museum and Research Centre, part of the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music, is to conserve the late master’s home in its (nearly) original state and to channel his spirit to those who visit his official accomodation in the building of the Old Academy of Music.

Our museum, on one hand, protects and presents the composer’s original instruments, furniture, personal objects, on the other it makes his digitalized manuscripts, books, and music scores ready for research. It continuously collects and analyzes the new documents of his time and of Liszt himself, and provides access to them through a database available on the website.

Our colleagues channel Liszt’s intellectual legacy to today’s people with temporary exhibitions, educational programs for children, concerts, birthday festivals and other events. Liszt’s home was once a meeting point for the best, most devoted musicians, representatives of other branches of art, and those of the Hungarian higher intellectual circles. This is our guideline for the quality of our concerts and invited artists.

Our institution operates in an open spirit, in accordance with the master’s ideals. It forms international cooperation and considers it its mission to present his work, national values and to represent Liszt’s Hungarian thinking in order to form an image of Liszt as true as possible to Hungarian and international audience. The Liszt Ferenc Memorial Museum and Research Centre is the Hungarian centre of Liszt-related research. It presents the discoveries of our colleagues in publications, our researchers hold lectures abroad as well, they participate in national and international conferences, thus securing our continuous connection to international Liszt-research.

Our museum plays a central role in keeping alive the Liszt-cult in Hungary and abroad with its diverse activities, while working in close relationship with the direction, professors, researchers and students of the Academy.
